Three Spades was dark when I arrived. It always was. Normally, I took a portal to the front gates. I liked the anticipation of the brief walk up to the front doors, knowing Lilia was waiting for me behind them.

Tonight, I couldn’t wait.

I opened a portal straight into the baby’s room, hoping to find Lilia there in the rocking chair. Once she was in my arms, our bed wouldn’t be far away.

To my dismay, she wasn’t there.

I trudged through the house like a man possessed, throwing doors open and scanning for the red of her hair. Our bedroom was empty. So was the library, save for a single maid.

“Lord Vassago?” She lowered her feather duster as she turned to me, eyes wide and lips parted gently like she was hoping for a kiss.

I turned again, slamming the door behind me. Alastor’s betrayal had cast me into a black fucking mood, and there was only one thing to cure it.

I needed Lilia. Desperately. Now.

When I burst into my office, I finally discovered her. She was sitting on my desk, a hand flush with its surface, long legs dangling off the edge. Her head was turned as she rubbed the back of her neck and arched her back. Her dress was a pale pink that matched the flush in the apples of her cheeks.

I marched toward her, already imagining that dress on the floor.

“Caezar?” Her eyes widened as she spotted me. “I didn’t think you’d be—”

I took her face in my hands and forced myself between her thighs, crushing her words beneath my lips. She tasted like fresh apples, sweet and tart.

“I need you,” I growled against her, fumbling for the ties of her dress.

“Okay, but…” She laughed, a little nervously. Did I scare her? Maybe she had reason to be afraid. In the moment, I didn’t care. “Caezar, wait, I only sat down for just a moment”

“I don’t want to wait.” I tore at the dress’s ties with one hand and swept her hair aside with the other so I could feast on her pale, slender neck. She gasped as I clamped down on her skin, sucked hard, and released. “I want to fuck you on this desk until you beg me for mercy. Until you’re screaming my fucking—”

A throat cleared behind me. In an instant, the wind was stolen from my sails.

“I’d rather not hear screaming tonight, if it’s all the same to you.” Allesandra entered the room. She held a hot water bottle in a soft blue cozy. “You can rut later. Right now, we have more important things to deal with.”

She handed Lilia the water bottle. Lilia thanked her and moaned—far too erotically—as she pressed it to her lower back.

“Sorry, Caezar.” Lilia gave me a small, sweet smile. “Bad timing.”

“No, perfect timing,” Allesandra said. She reached for an envelope on the desk that I hadn’t noticed and handed it to me. “You need to see this.”

“What is this?” I asked, confused.

“Turn it over,” Allesandra suggested.

Half of a black wax seal clung to the tip of the envelope’s flap, broken.
